After a breast cancer diagnosis a few years ago, I became really focused on lower toxicity products- in particular laundry detergent, skincare, and cosmetics. I'm so thankful to be cancer free now, and I'm always happy to share any "clean" or safer products that I love.
I'm not an alarmist in the sense that I become fearful of everything I put in or on my body, but I do focus on making choices for safter products when there is a choice available.
The state of NY has also recently banned some laundry detergents, and I think we will see more of that as consumers really start questioning the safey of the products that we use.
On my quest for safer laundry detergent I have tried the laundry sheets, and other safer products-- but nothing I like as much as this new concoction I keep seeing on the internet. You're going to want to buy the ingredients in bulk so that you can make up a nice large batch of detergent.
LAUNDRY DETERGENT RECIPE: (double it if you have a large family):
1 1/2 Cups Baking Soda
1 1/2 Cups Washing Soda (This is a laundry booster)
1/2 Cup Lavender Epsom Salt or Eucalyptus Epsom Salt
1/4 Cup Fine Grain Sea Salt
20-25 drops of Essential Oil of your choice. I like this Fresh Linen or Lavender scent
Use 2-4 tablespoons depending on your load. I have an extra capacity washer and stinky teenager clothes, so I use 4 tablespoons.
Bulk White Vinegar (to use in the fabric softener section of your machine)
Mix all ingredients together and incorporate the essential oil at the end. Break up an clumps and make sure the essential oil is well distributed. Store in a glass jar. The powder may clump up over time, and just break up the clumps when you use it. Pour 1/4 cup of White Vinegar in the fabric softener area of your machine before each load-- it's a great natural fabric softener and helps to brighten clothes. For my batch I used the Eucalypus scented Epsom Salt and the Fresh Linen essential oil. Yall!! I'm so please with how well it washed our clothes-- this recipe is a keeper! The scent on your clothes will not be potent like those commercial grade detergents, but it is light and refreshing.
Let me know if you try it and how it works for you.

JuJu
